ReTune Nashville remembered the flood of May 2010 by holding an art auction on the 2011 Anniversary. Artists donated their talent by re-claiming musical instruments damaged by the flood waters and turning them into works of art to be auctioned. Lucky bidders were able to win collector pieces such as Nashville Predators guitar autographed by the team, a Peter Frampton guitar with artwork by Nashville recording-artist and cartoonist Guy Gilchrist, a crystal studded piano bench, a Brad Paisley guitar with artwork by Steve Wariner and “Play On” an art piece by Joel Anderson.
As many of us in Middle Tennessee know, the Flood of May 2010 cost many musicians to lose their instruments to water damage. What a wonderful way of turning a disaster around into a life supporting project; creating one of a kind works of art from damaged instruments.
Nashville has ReTune Nashville founder Sheri O’Neal to thank for her inventive way of turning disaster into a supporting idea. O’Neal is quoted as saying ““I am incredibly humbled. The turnout and supporters for this event, the time and talent donated by the visual and performing artists, and the fact that we were able to sell every single piece of art in our auction in one night.” “This is probably the most amazing thing I have ever been a part of in my entire life. The fact that a small idea to help people could turn into something so big is an inspiration. A few weeks ago, we interviewed about 20 musicians and shared their stories on our YouTube page so that our supporters could see where their money was going. To see that ReTune’s efforts are really helping the music community, even one year later, makes me feel really good.”
ReTune Nashville was able to raise $35,000 the night of the auction. And, they continue to raise money for through their website. All monies raised through ReTune Nashville will be directly donated to MusiCares Nashville Flood Relief to support the recovery efforts of Nashville musicians.
